The Soul Reapers Book CoverPosted: September 7, 2015
I intend to do the art for my upcoming short story collection, The Soul Reapers. I have a few ideas in mind, and so this will be the project space for it. Let’s start with the first few designs. Feel free to weigh in with your thoughts.
Idea: Creepy, terrifying, set the stage for the horror stories within.
This is the first take:
Got “terrifying,” so I’m on the right track. Someone suggested the hand be more prominent, so this is Take 2:
The darkened body just doesn’t cut it for me. Strike.
Then I found a creative commons image that really struck me, and got these:
I’m liking the purple over the red, but this just isn’t cutting it for me, either. I’d rather have something unique like the original. Back to the drawing board!
Found a few more images and a better picture of one of my kids. Today’s progress…was a big success. Finally! I’m really pleased with how this one came out. I combined my daughter’s face shot with the haunted house background, then changed the stroke from “normal” to “virtual light.” Trimmed up the edges of her face with the brush (set on black) and played around with a couple of different bloody hands until I got it just right. It first read “SKUL,” so I added an O. The funny thing? The fonts are all the same, but the SOUL looks creepier. I love it! Would you pick this off the shelf?
